Gantz Manga Review

So after reading the manga up to the current chapter I think it is fair to do a review of it, the manga not the anime or movie that will come later on.

Gantz is a ongoing manga published in Young Jump a weekly magazine which started its run in October of 2000. It is being published by Dark Horse comics in North America and so far there are 29 volumes in circulation. This series is not for the faint of heart it features heavy amounts of gore, nudity, profanity, and mature themes. Though the art is in my opinion lacking in some area's while in others especially during the battle scenes look especially fantastic and the design of the suits is cool. I did find that the male characters were drawn a bit better than the females but it is just a small gripe. Now many reviews have stated that this series is "disgusting, perverse, and sadistic" but if you keep reading you'll find themes that work so well it is hard to find in any manga in the past and present. Themes of social destruction and the end of the world work so well that you feel a sense of loss for the main cast, coupled with the fact that many of the main cast come back and continue to fight that their suffering can never end. Though when they do find happiness they hold on too it and never let it go as is the case with the main protagonist and his love interest. I won't go into too much detail with the story but a high schooler named Kei Kuruno unwillingly helps his childhood friend Kato Masaru save a drunk hobo from the train tracks, but they get killed by the train and end up in a room with a big black ball. Now this tale is quite long and the first couple hundred chapters is strictly for the GantZ missions. Which are great the action and the gore, coupled with a few light sex scenes are pretty good but the current arc is probably the best and Kei's devotion to his current mission of saving the one he loves is good and I can't wait to see where they take the story but hopefully it doesn't stop here.

Art 3.5/5
Story 5/5
Overall 4.25/5

It's too bad the anime and now the movie had been such disappointments in my eyes.
